Almond Overnight Oats (Dairy-Free)

I’ve seen Overnight Oats trending on other food blogs and wondered why oats soaked into mush is a popular recipe. What’s the appeal? Yet, of course, a whole bunch of people on the Internet cannot possibly be wrong.

Usually when you hear the words ‘trend’ and ‘in-style,’ you think of fashion. Stripes are in, 5-inch heels are out, sneakers are making a comeback, and pleated maxi skirts are a thing of the past. (Note: I have no idea about the in fashion. It already takes a while for me to put together an outfit I feel good it; do not add societal pressures to the mix. The best part of being unaware of fashion is that I don’t need to keep up with the trends. I can wear whatever is in my closet no matter the style. Plus, I stick out at parties… but that is not always a good thing.)

Believe it or not, food has trends too. Tacos, alternative kinds of pasta, purple foods, turmeric, cauliflower, and my favorite, dessert for breakfast are all the hot topics for 2017. Remember the sweet potato toasts, smoothie bowls, and cauliflower pizza crusts of last year? If you don’t, go look them up now. They are all awesome and staying ‘in style’ is dumb when it stops you from trying out delicious foods.


I don’t think there is one aspect of life where there are no trends.

Books have tropes, like the outdated damsel in distress and insta-romances. These are being replaced with strong, independent women-who-aren’t-like-other-girls, and the brooding, mysterious bad boy-who-only-needs-love-to-heal-him-from-his-dark-past. I hate all of these, but there are some other cliches I do enjoy, like the brutish older character who’s life and perspective is changed by an innocent, young child. I must have heard and seen this storyline many times and each one warms my heart.

There are also trends with elementary schoolchildren. When I was in first grade, trading stickers was the most impressive thing you can do. Then came stationary, followed by fun erasers, Littlest Pet Shop, and Chinese jump rope. In high school, the ‘in’ thing becomes Starbucks, Instagram, and low-fat yogurt. I’m not kidding about that last one. During morning recess, I couldn’t walk a few feet without seeing someone else eating it. Dieting was a hot thing to do, but while the other trends are fun and trivial, this one is potentially harmful.

Even music has trends. The age of rock has been replaced with hip-hop and rap, and what even is country nowadays?


Trends are a curious thing. Why is one thing popular while others are deemed unappealing by the masses? Take wedding rings for example. Most baby boomers wear gold bands, but all new couples wear white gold. What has changed their minds to think that yellow gold is less desirable?

People are naturally drawn to things that are familiar, but with a hint of something new and daring. We also tend to shy away from things we deem ‘fads’ since we don’t want to invest in something that will die out quickly. That is why things that become popular overnight fizzle out a short time later. For an example, think of every viral Youtube video, from the Duck Song to the Gummy Bear song to the ‘Greatest freak out ever.’ (If you’ve never seen those, don’t. They are a waste of your life.) On the contrast, people or ideas that slowly evolved and progressed are the ones that are still popular today. Think of a celebrity that had a slow rise to fame and still remains in the spotlight.

Besides for these points and the basic knowledge of human psychology, the answer to “what makes things popular” is inconclusive. It’s a phenomenon even the experts have trouble explaining.

Being that I am no expert, after all, I’m just trying to write a blog post, I’m going to return to the main point here: Overnight Oats. Most recipes used Greek yogurt, but for those with dairy intolerances, I substituted almond milk and added almond butter for protein, taste, and texture. You can easily substitute peanut butter; in fact, I recommend it. (See the last post if you don’t know why: Peanut Butternut Soup.)

Overnight Oats are easy to make and guarantee a delicious, healthy, and filling breakfast on the go. With summer coming in on this side of the globe, traditional hot oatmeal is not appealing in this muggy climate. Feel free to experiment with nuts, seeds, fruits, coconut, berries, spices, and other add-ins to switch up this easy breakfast.

After all, if it’s written on the Internet, it can’t possibly be wrong.


Almond Overnight Oats (Dairy-Free)


  • 1/2 cup gluten-free oats
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tsp cinnamon



  1. Mix all of the above ingredients in a sealed container.
  2. Cover, and refrigerate overnight or at least 6 hours.
  3. Stir and enjoy!
